Join us as we welcome Michael Mahooty, who is a full blooded member of the Zuni Nation in New Mexico. He began his carving career after his father, a well known Zuni silversmith and later a carver himself, passed away when Michael was 12 years old. His older brother taught him a few steps, but then Michael learned on his own, creating the animal fetishes for which Zuni are known for world-wide. His innate gift allows him to use very dense rock as tiger eye (gold color); amethyst (purple); obsidian (black); labradorite (bright rainbow iridescent colors); and lepidolite (light purple) to create memorable traditional fetishes such as turtles and bears, along with modern figures including butterflies and elephants.
