"Bible Storyland" Documentary Screening at DOCUTAH

Event Date:
Thursday, September 6, 2012 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Bible Storyland" follows the story of Harvey Jordan, a Los Angeles art dealer who discovered drawings by a Disneyland artist of proposed rides and attractions for a Bible themed amusement park intended to open in Southern CA in 1961. Bible Storyland was almost identical to Disneyland, except for its Biblical theme. Its proposed rides included Jonah and the Whale, Noah's Ark, David and Goliath, Moses parting the Red Sea and many others (most of the concept drawings are on our website).

The film includes interviews with a Biblical scholar and two elder members of the clergy, and explores the topic of how Biblical stories are represented in pop culture, and how they should be represented. During Harvey's journey to uncover the mystery behind the park, he travels to The Holyland Experience in Orlando, Florida, and we look at clips of Biblical references in films and TV (including from The Simpsons and CeCille B, DeMille's classic films).

Other interesting elements of the story include the pivotal role of Jack Haley (a devout Catholic who played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz), Donald Duncan (the founder Duncan Yo-yo's) and Nat Winecoff, a former Disneyland Vice President who was determined to rival Walt Disney, as Disneyland had opened in 1955.

Location: Westates Red Cliffs Cinema Theaters, 1750 E. Red Cliffs Dr., Washington, UT 84780
