PHILLIPS CRAIG DEAN-REVELATION SONG
Imagine walking into your church, and instead of seeing the Crucifixion Cross prominently displayed, your eyes are drawn to an electric chair near the altar. Picture the cover of your Bible, with The Cross replaced by "the chair."
The more you glance around, the more you notice the eponymous symbol for modern execution on display from every angle. All the crosses in your church have been replaced by electric chairs.
We are used to seeing the cross Christ hung on as a symbol of hope, salvation, forgiveness, and peace. We take comfort in what the Cross has come to represent.
In fact, I rarely associate the image of The Cross with the brutality of what took place on it, or leading up to the time Jesus spent on it.
Pilate passed the buck. After the Jewish council decided that Jesus was a huge problem for their politics, they sent him to the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate. Pilate couldn’t find Jesus guilty of any real crime, so he said so. Then the people of Jerusalem started pushing back. In fear of a revolt, he looked for another option. After hearing that Jesus was from Nazareth, he passed the buck and sent Jesus to Herod. As a Galilean, Jesus could fall under Herod’s jurisdiction, so Pilate passed the buck to someone else.

“My God my God why have you forsaken me?” Read Psalm 22 if you’re wondering what Jesus really meant. It’s a Psalm of David written hundreds of years before Jesus was born. David was a songwriter & poet. He was wrestling with the challenges in his life and he penned this Psalm in his pain. It’s so deep it actually includes some prophecy of the coming Messiah - a different kind of king in David’s lineage.
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.
As you read through the Palm Sunday story this weekend at church, there’s a few things I want to point out to you that might rock your world.
The Gospels say Jesus, rode into Jerusalem on that colt of a donkey who had never been ridden. That actually fulfilled a prophecy in Zechariah 9 written like 500 years before Jesus was born. It says:
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (meaning he has never been ridden before)
There’s so much of the Easter story what was foretold hundreds of years before Jesus was ever born. The prophet Jeremiah said,” They took 30 pieces of silver. The price of the one priced by sons of Israel, and they purchased the potter’s field.”
